Differentiation of group A from other beta hemolytic streptococci with bacitracin.

چکیده
In the study of upper respiratory infections, nose and throat cultures for beta hemolytic streptococci3 are essential. Since group A streptococci are implicated in human respiratory infections more than other groups, it is important that streptococci recovered on culture be identified as belonging to group A or not. The finding of streptococci which belong to groups other than A in the nose or throat usually is interpreted as being of little or no clinical or epidemiological importance. The only satisfactory means for differentiation of group A streptococci has been a serological method. The supply of necessary antisera has been limited, and the method requires considerable skill and technical experience if any high degree of accuracy is to be obtained. In epidemiological studies in large populations during epidemics of streptococcal infections, the number of streptococci isolated may be large and the serological identification burdensome and costly. Maxted (1953) reported a method for differentiating streptococci belonging to group A from other beta hemolytic streptococci by their sensitivity to bacitracin. Filter paper squares were soaked in the antibiotic and rapidly dried. The strain of streptococcus to be tested was streaked on the surface of a blood agar plate and a bacitracin impregnated filter paper square placed on the

RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF GROUP A STREPTOCOCCI BY PYRROLIDONYL-β-APHTHYLAMIDE HYDROLYSIS
In a clinical trial a new pyrrolidonyl-β-naphthylamide (PYR) hydrolysis test was compared with the bacitracin disk susceptibility test for accuracy in the presumptive identification of group A streptococci (GAS). Among 128 isolates of beta-hemolytic streptococci 93 group A isolates were found. The sensitivity of the PYR and bacitracin tests were similar (98.9%), but the bacitracin test had ...
متن کاملIncidence and characterization of beta-hemolytic Streptococcus milleri and differentiation from S. pyogenes (group A), S. equisimilis (group C), and large-colony group G streptococci.
The biochemical characteristics of 172 clinical isolates of group A, C, F, or G or "nongroupable" beta-hemolytic streptococci were examined. Among these isolates, 91 were identified as beta-hemolytic strains of Streptococcus milleri. The remaining isolates included 20 Streptococcus pyogenes, 21 Streptococcus equisimilis, 37 large-colony group G streptococci, and 3 unidentified nongroupable isol...
متن کاملBacitracin and coagglutination for grouping of beta-hemolytic streptococci.
Bacitracin may be used for presumptive differentiation of group A from other beta-hemolytic streptococci. Whatever criteria are used for the test, a small number of erroneous results will be obtained. With the 1,161 strains studied in this laboratory, using a zone of 10 mm or greater as indicative of group A was better than using Maxted's original criterion of any zone of inhibition for group A...
متن کاملRapid extraction method with pronase B for grouping beta-hemolytic streptococci.
The enzyme, Pronase B, was used to extract the C carbohydrates of betahemolytic streptococci for serological grouping. Reference strains of streptococci, groups A through N, were accurately grouped by using this extraction method. Of the beta-hemolytic streptococci isolated from patients' cultures, 1,197 were classified as either group A or not group A by this method. There was 100% correlation...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Bacti-Lab streptococci culture systems for selective recovery and identification of group A streptococci.
Twenty-nine lots of Bacti-Lab streptococci culture plates containing nalidixic acid, neomycin, and amphotericin B were inoculated with 25 strains of group A, B, C, F, and G strepotocci, 13 strains of nonstrepotcoccal organisms representative of the throat flora, and 198 fresh clinical thorat specimens to determine the accuracy of the plates in identifying group A streptococci. With the Bacti-La...
